NICS is now under new management as a division of MATRIC, the Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research & Innovation Center, Inc. MATRIC is a 501(c)(3) organization offering services in technical areas including chemical and environmental technologies.
Our goal at NICS is to provide value for industries and their surrounding communities by serving as a resource for health, safety, environmental, and security issues. As a result of the current economic climate, NICS faces challenges in securing funding to pursue its mission. MATRIC leadership seeks to identify and pursue new opportunities for NICS and continue its excellent history of working for Americans and the chemical industry to provide studies, communications, and viable solutions to the problems posed by risks associated with hazardous chemicals.
We are actively seeking to regain support for these NICS activities via community advisory panels, the WVMA CIC, local agencies, board members, and previous supporters of NICS. Our objective is to find opportunities for NICS to continue its mission and understand the needs not served so we may market and communicate the experience and resources NICS/MATRIC can provide. I would appreciate your continued support of NICS, and your input is welcome and appreciated.
My Background
I am a native of West Virginia, earning a BS in chemical engineering from West Virginia Institute of Technology and a MS in engineering from Marshall University Graduate College.
I started my career in the chemical industry at Institute working as a production and improvement engineer for UCC focusing on safety, capacity, and reliability. I continued my career working at the South Charleston site as a project manager and improvement engineer, serving the South Charleston and Midland plants for several Dow business areas. In these roles I have managed many projects and activities to provide health, safety and environmental improvements, specifically addressing the risks identified by process hazard analysis, layer of protection analysis, EHS teams, PSM compliance, and Dow standards for loss prevention. These projects have resulted in thousands of improvements with a wide range of scope. After leaving Dow in 2007 and joining the MATRIC team I complemented my experience with process engineering and research activities in the development and construction of a biodiesel plant in Wisconsin. My continuing activities have included leading a team of engineers to redesign the plant for new raw materials and to develop a license package for the technology at twice the original capacity.
The focus of my career has been on bringing improvements to the chemical industry, including its EHS performance. Through NICS and with your assistance, I intend to continue pursuing this focus.
Sincerely,
Mark Nunley
